Well, that was fun. This is the second season I've led my Puffin and Seabird Specials for Yorkshire Coast Nature on the Great White Cape of Flamborough Head, and due to demand, I extended it to thirteen sessions this year....
... and I'm glad did. With a maximum of six clients per session, it's an intimate and always special adventure, which - while the overriding emphasis is of course on the breeding seabirds - always provides different experiences.
Over these last couple of weeks that's included lunge-feeding Minke Whales, various pods of Bottlenose Dolphins, hunting Barn Owls and Peregrine Falcons, huge movements of migrating Swifts, Great Egret and much more....
...but ultimately of course, the focus was on the breeding seabirds, which turn this unique part of the coast into a bustling, sensory-overloading metropolis at this time of year. The end of June and early July are the 'sweet spot' here, when pretty much all the target species have chicks, and are at their most showy and entertaining.
Our 'Big Eight' - Puffins, Razorbills, Guillemots, Kittiwakes, Herring Gulls, Shags, Fulmars and Gannets - are all guaranteed, and thanks to my partnership with the good people of Zeiss Birding, I have free, top-of-the-range optics for everyone to use, which greatly enhances the experience; they always go down very well indeed....!
