Shy Albatrosses, Australia 2011

Witnessing multitudes of albatrosses following, circling and swimming around the boat was truly a privilege, and identifying some were easier than others. These Shy Albatrosses Thalassarche Cauta - of which at least five visited us on the day - performed beautifully, and both adults and immatures were present.

T. Cauta is an endemic Australian breeder, with colonies confined to just three islands off Tasmania; with a global population of between 12,000 and 13,000 pairs, they are considered near-threatened by Birdlife International.
