Yellow-tailed Black-cockatoos, Sydney

There was a constant stream of highlights over the first 48 hours in Sydney (and the best was very much still to come), but if one species had to be singled out, it'd likely be these Yellow-tailed Black-cockatoos in Centennial Park.

Another bird that field guides couldn't hope to prepare for or do justice to, everything about them is other-worldly - including their comically demonic-/ muppet-/ pirate-like appearance, suitably bizarre contact calls, marionette-like flight, large raptor-like profile, and their habit of disappearing en masse almost as soon the mob in question had ascended into the canopy; freakishly wonderful.
